August 16 Worship from Home

Prayers and Reflections for August 16, 2020

[This may begin with the lighting of a Candle]

Call to Worship:

[Adapted from Maggie Watts-Hammond, Gathering Pentecost 1, 2017 page 28 ]

On a hot summer day, in the dust of a city street,
     God is there.
In a downpour of rain while running for shelter,
     God is there.
In a wide-open sky filled with stars past counting,
     God is there.
In a car, singing songs, when the journey’s been long,
     God is there.
No matter where we are,
     God is with us.

Opening Prayer:

[Adapted from Bill Steadman, Gathering Pentecost 1, 2014 page 30-31 ]

You touch our lives, O God, in many ways -
you raise us up when we feel down and discouraged.
You ground us when we are flighty and on edge.
You inspire us when we have lost a sense of who we are.
You accompany us in the many and varied journeys we undertake.
Be with us in this time of worship, and give us the direction we need
to face the future with hope and energy. Amen.

Offering Prayer:

[Adapted from Karen Boivin, Gathering Pentecost 1 2017 page 39]

Holy God, you have called our names and we have responded
with songs and prayers; with the gift of our time,
efforts, and finances. May these offerings be used
to share your love and justice, your kindness and compassion
with our fellow human beings and with all of creation. Amen.

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession:

[Adapted from https://re-worship.blogspot.com/

Merciful God, in love you created us, and in love you sustain us, day after day.
We pray for those who are estranged from spouse or family, friends or neighbours;
who find it difficult to forgive past wrongs done to them;
     hear our prayers.

We pray for those who for years have carried feelings of guilt or regret for
something they did or something they neglected to do; who find it difficult to ask
for forgiveness or forgive themselves;
     hear our prayers.

For those who find themselves far away from you, struggling to overcome their
doubts or disillusionment, and who wonder how to find their way back;
     hear our prayers.

For those watching someone they love try to cope with serious illness or injury, and
who long for your miraculous intervention;
     hear our prayers.

For the many others in our world who are suffering this day - from grief, or
loneliness, hunger, poverty, violence or illness;
     hear our prayers.

Sustain all those who look to you in hope. And strengthen us - your people - so that
we may be a light to all those who find themselves in darkness. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Words only, Voices United # 921
Sung Version, Voices United # 960 The Lord's Prayer (Langdon)

Closing

While we extinguish this candle,
we affirm that the light of Christ can never be put out.
May God’s love and grace be with us all.
Amen.
