April 26 Worship at Home

Prayers and Reflections for April 26, 2020

[This may begin with the lighting of a Candle]

Call to Worship: [Adapted from Carol Penner]

We need your presence on the long road, O God.
     The road between fear and hope,
     the road between the place where all is lost
     and the place of resurrection.
Like the disciples walking the road to Emmaus,
we are in need of your company!
     Jesus, stand among us!

Opening Prayer: [Adapted from Lindsey Sanderson]

Risen Christ, as you journeyed with the two

who walked the Emmaus Road,

travel with us on our journey of faith.

In our encounters on the way,

give us compassion to listen to the other’s story,

patience to explain what may seem obvious to ourselves,

and courage to make ourselves vulnerable,

so that others may encounter you through us,

and we may rediscover you through them.

Amen.

Blessed Brokenness

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession:

[Adapted from Susan Miller, www.churchofscotland.org.uk]

Holy One, you come to us in unexpected places:
in our homes, in our rooms, in our time of physical distancing;
in a journey on a dusty road, in food shared;
in conversation, in the stillness.

You come in the midst of our doubt, our fear, our sorrow.
You come in the power of the resurrection;
no pain and suffering is unknown to you.

You bring us peace,
and we pray for the places where there is no peace:
countries torn by war; refugees seeking homes;
prisoners facing torture; victims of senseless violence.

We need your peace, O God:
peace to the tensions and conflicts within us;
peace to the regrets, the failures;
peace to the broken relationships, and lost friendships.

Compassionate One, you bring us peace,
for you are a friend to us.
In those times when we are alone,
in those situations when we are lonely,
in our uncertainties and our doubts,
remind us, O God, that you are there, even if unseen.

Holy One, you bring us peace,
and we pray that we too may become peacemakers. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Words only, Voices United # 921

Closing

While we extinguish this candle,
we affirm that the light of Christ can never be put out.
May God’s love and grace be with us all.
Amen.
